Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)

Good Agricultural Practice (GAP's) are protocols designed to control and or eliminate the possibility of contamination of food commodities from direct or indirect sources and contact while providing a safe and sanitary environment for all who handle those commodities on the farm. GAP programs as part of an overall food safety program address issues such as:

  • present and future site selection considering adjacent land use, etc.
  • chemical use
  • irrigation and sanitation water sourcing and use
  • Pest monitoring and IPM (Integrated Pest Management)
  • Pesticide use
  • Harvesting and storage practices (including worker hygiene, field sanitation, product transportation, temperature control and packaging storage)

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are designed, implemented, monitored and documented to provide proof that everything possible is being done to protect workers and commodities in this critical area of the food distribution chain.
